Dictating long-form writing

Long-form writing rewards getting the first draft out fast and editing later. Voiacast moves drafting to your voice — the editing stays on the keyboard, where it is faster anyway.

Before

Drafting is slow because typing is slow. You stop at the end of every paragraph and check what you wrote. By paragraph four the rhythm is gone. The doc sits at 600 words for two days before you come back.

After

You hold the hotkey, you talk, the words land in the doc. You finish a paragraph before you stop to think. By the end of an hour the draft is long enough to edit. The editing happens on the keyboard with the wrist budget you saved.

Jobs to be done

What this scenario is for.

How to

Step by step.

  1. Open the doc in whatever app you write in. Voiacast types into Notion, Google Docs, Apple Notes, Bear, Obsidian, iA Writer, VS Code, BBEdit, or a raw Markdown file in your editor. Pick the field your final draft will live in; you do not need a separate dictation document.
  2. Hold the hotkey for one paragraph at a time. Talk a complete thought, release, talk the next one. Pauses inside a paragraph are fine; releasing the hotkey ends the transcription. The paragraph-per-press cadence keeps the model focused on a chunk it can handle well.
  3. Stop checking; keep going. Resist the urge to read what just landed. The editing pass comes after. Push through to a long enough first draft that you have material to edit.
  4. Edit on the keyboard. Reading speed exceeds typing speed; editing speed exceeds dictation speed. Save the voice for the first draft; do the edit pass with the keyboard.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered briefly.

How long can I dictate in one go?

Each press is one transcription, which works best up to a long paragraph. For multi-paragraph chunks, press-release-press between paragraphs and the natural break helps the model handle each chunk well.

Does it handle accents?

Yes — Whisper-family models are accent-robust at general accuracy levels. The larger Pro models close the gap further for tougher accents.

Can I dictate in multiple languages?

Yes. The model detects the spoken language automatically. Supported out of the box: English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, and Mandarin.

Will it format markdown for me?

Punctuation lands itself; explicit markdown syntax does not. Say what you mean and add the hash, bullet, and italics on the keyboard pass.

What about technical vocabulary?

Add the technical terms you use to the local custom dictionary. They will spell the way you spell them on every transcription, regardless of which writing app you are in.
